Start a WhatsApp conversation from a contact
Click Start WhatsApp conversation on the contact or the opportunity: Inbox opens with that contact's conversation ready for you to type. If you handle more than one number, the screen asks which one to speak from before it opens.
Before you start
- The contact needs a phone number on record — without one the button does not appear.
- The workspace needs at least one connected WhatsApp number. See Connect your WhatsApp.
- Role: Owner, Admin, Editor and Attendant can start the conversation. An Attendant only uses the numbers assigned to them — see Attendant assignment.
Steps
- Open the contact (or their opportunity) in the CRM.
- In the contact panel, click the WhatsApp icon — Start WhatsApp conversation.
- If you have one number available, the conversation opens on it directly. If you have more than one, New conversation appears asking you to Select the number that will send the message: pick it and the conversation opens.
- Type in the message box. If the contact's 24-hour window has closed, Inbox offers an approved template instead of the free-text box.
The number you pick is the sender the contact sees. If the contact was already talking to your company on another number, that conversation stays as it is — the one you opened here runs on the number you chose.
If the conversation does not open
You can also start from the inbox
Inside Inbox, the + button next to Conversations opens the same New conversation, but with contact search — useful when you did not come from the CRM. It searches by name, phone or funnel and lists only contacts with WhatsApp on record.
