How do I give my members area students an AI assistant?
Link one of your AI agents to the members area and students get an Assistant tab in the portal: they ask questions and receive direct links to the lessons, posts, courses and events that answer them. The assistant only sees what that student can already see.
Prerequisites
- Permission to edit the members area.
- At least one active agent, created on the Agents screen. The assistant uses your workspace's AI key, the same one the agent uses.
Link an agent to the area
- Open the members area and go to the Links tab of the editor.
- In the Assistants section, click Add assistant and pick the agent.
- Under Classrooms with access, choose the classes that will see the assistant, or turn on All classrooms. Save the scope.
With no active agents, the section shows Go to Agents. A paused agent shows the Agent paused badge and does not answer students.
To hide the assistant without unlinking it, turn off Active. To rename the portal button, use Show assistants with label.
Adjust what the assistant looks up
Click Adjust assistant on the linked agent:
What the student sees
Students in the chosen classes see the Assistant tab at the top of the portal; everyone else does not. Each question opens a conversation the student can rename or archive. Answers cite lessons, posts, courses and events as cards that open a preview. Lessons not yet released to the student are never revealed: the assistant says they are not available yet.
If it didn't work
- The Assistant tab does not show for a student: check that the assistant is Active, the student's class is under Classrooms with access, and the agent is not paused.
- "This assistant is not available right now": the agent was paused or removed, or the workspace AI key is not set. Check the Agents screen.
- "Too many messages in a short time": the student sent many questions in a row and can try again in a moment.
