  • How do I branch an automation by how the contact engages with an e-mail?

"Didn't click within 3 days → send another e-mail" is an e-mail track. In ClickMax you build it on the Send e-mail step itself. Turn on Wait for engagement and set a time limit, and the step gets two outputs. Clicked the e-mail is for contacts who interact within the time limit, and the automation moves on through it right away. No engagement in N days is for contacts who did not interact by the end of the time limit.

Role: any member with edit access to the workspace.

    Before you start

    Steps

    1. Click the e-mail step to open its panel.
    2. Turn on Wait for engagement.
    3. In Wait up to, enter the time limit in hours or days. The default is 3 days.
    4. In What counts as engagement, choose:
      • Clicking a link (recommended). Works in every e-mail app.
      • Opening or clicking. Automatic opens by bots and antivirus software do not count.
    5. On the canvas, connect both outputs of the step: Clicked the e-mail (or Opened or clicked) and No engagement in N days. You can only activate the automation once both are connected.

Only engagement with this e-mail, sent by this step, for this execution counts. A click on an e-mail from another automation, from a broadcast or from an earlier pass through the same step does not end the wait.

To turn the wait off, disable Wait for engagement. The step goes back to a single output and keeps the connection that went to Clicked the e-mail.

    If it did not work

    • A contact who opened the e-mail went down "No engagement": about 3 in 10 contacts (Apple Mail, iCloud and Hotmail) never report that they opened an e-mail, because the provider opens the message on the contact's behalf. For them, only clicks count. That is why Clicking a link is the recommended option.
    • The contact has no valid e-mail address or has unsubscribed: the e-mail is not sent, and the automation moves on through No engagement right away, without waiting for the time limit.
    • I can't activate the automation: check that both outputs of the e-mail step are connected to a step.
