How do I give several contacts members area access at once?
Use the Add to members area action. It gives several contacts, at once, access to a community (with the role you choose), to classes of a members area, or both. Contacts without an email are skipped. When you give access to classes, each contact gets the access email unless you clear Send access email.
Before you start
- At least one community, or one members area with classes. If you don't have an area yet, start with Build your first members area.
- The contacts need an email: the email is their members area login.
- Role: check the permissions table.
Steps
-
Open the action from one of these places:
- Contacts: tick the contacts (or tick the header box and use Select all N to take everything the current filters show). In the actions bar, open More actions and click Add to members area.
- A list: in Lists, open the list, click the arrow next to Add lead at the top right and choose Add to members area. It covers every contact in the list.
- A segment: open the segment, click the arrow next to Create broadcast and choose Add to members area. The option only shows once the segment has its synced list.
- A community: under Members area → Communities, open the community, go to the People tab and click Add contacts in bulk (next to Invite). The community comes preselected and the Area and classes section starts off.
- Students: on the My Students page, click Add contacts in bulk (next to Add Student).
-
If you came from Community or Students, pick the Source under Who gets access:
- Specific contacts — search by name, email or phone (type at least 2 letters) and pick one or more.
- A list — only manual lists show up.
- A segment.
From the other places the audience is already set, and the modal shows how many contacts are selected.
-
In the Community section (on by default), choose the Community and the Community role: Member (default), Moderator, Mentor, Instructor or Admin. Turn the section off if you don't want to grant any community.
-
In the Area and classes section, choose the Members area and one or more Classes. Changing the area clears the chosen classes. Turn the section off if you only want the community.
-
With classes picked, the Send access email box shows up, checked by default. Clear it to grant access without notifying the people by email.
-
Click Add. The button only unlocks with at least one of the two sections on and filled in.
With up to 200 contacts, access is granted right away and the Access granted notice says how many contacts were added — and, when it applies, how many were skipped for having no email. Above 200, the action runs in the background and its progress shows under Bulk actions as Members area access.
What happens to each contact
In the community
- People not yet in it join with the chosen role.
- People already in it get the chosen role — except Admins, who are never demoted.
- People who are blocked or muted stay that way.
In the area and classes
- The contact becomes a student of the area and is enrolled in the chosen classes; each class's courses become available.
- Each course's access time follows what the class has configured. A course with no access time configured in the class gets lifetime access.
- Courses locked for sale inside the class are not unlocked by this action — they still depend on the purchase.
Running it again for someone who already has access doesn't duplicate anything or restart their access time.
Let the contacts know
The access email only goes out when you grant classes with Send access email checked, and only to people who just gained access to the class. Joining only the community sends no email. To send access later, go to My Students, select the students and use Resend access in the bulk actions — it sends to each selected student's email.
To invite a single person to the community, with the invite email included, see How do I invite a person to a community?.

If it didn't work
- The notice says some contacts had no email → they weren't added, because the email is the login. Fill in the contact's email and run the action again.
- The Add button stays disabled → turn at least one section on and fill it in: a community with a role, or an area with at least one class.
- The list doesn't show under A list → only manual lists show there. For a segment's list, use A segment.
- Add to members area doesn't show in the segment menu → the segment's contact list isn't ready yet, which happens right after creating it. Wait a moment and reload the page.
- A course in the class stayed locked → expected: a course on sale inside the class is only unlocked by the purchase.
- Someone's role didn't change → the person is a community Admin, and admins are never demoted in bulk. Adjust it manually in the People tab.
- Someone stayed blocked or muted → expected: the action doesn't undo moderation. Lift the block or mute in the community itself.
- No email reached the contacts → check whether Send access email was cleared, whether you only gave community access, or whether the contact already had access to the class. See Let the contacts know.
