Why can't my buyer try paying by card again at checkout?
When the same buyer has their card refused several times in a short period, the checkout blocks new card payment attempts for up to 30 minutes and shows a too-many-attempts message. The block is temporary and ends on its own.
This protects your product against card testing: fraudsters use checkouts to find out which stolen cards still work, and every attempt creates refusals, chargebacks and risk for your account.
What counts as a refused attempt
- Only card refusals from the payment provider count, such as insufficient funds or an unauthorised transaction.
- Form errors, such as a missing address or invalid instalments, do not count.
- Attempts are counted by the buyer's connection, browser and email. Changing only one of them does not lift the block.
What the buyer can do
- Pay with Pix or boleto, which stay available during the block, if your offer accepts these methods.
- Or wait up to 30 minutes and try again with a card the bank approves.
- If the card keeps being refused, contact the issuing bank. The refusal comes from the bank, not from the checkout.
If it didn't work
- Payment refused without a block: see the error codes.
- Which methods your offer accepts: see accepted payment methods.
