  • English
  • What is a custom field description for?

The description explains what the field means to whoever uses it. It shows when you hover over the field name, and the field search matches it — so a field with a cryptic name stays findable by anyone who remembers what it does.

You fill it in under Description (help text) when creating or editing the field.

    Where the description shows

Hover over the field name to see the description in any of these places:

    • The field selector in the contact and opportunity filters.
    • The segment builder.
    • The additional fields of a contact and of an opportunity.
    • The column header in Specialist Mode and the Columns panel.

When the field has no description, hovering shows the full name instead — handy because long names appear truncated in these lists.

How the search uses the description

When you type in Search field…, Clickmax looks for the text in both the name and the description, ignoring accents and letter case. If the field showed up because of its description, the matching snippet appears highlighted under the name, so it is clear why that field was returned.

    If it did not work

    • No description on hover: confirm the field has Description (help text) filled in — without it, only the full name shows.
    • The search does not find the text you remember: the text must be in the field name or description; review it in how to create custom fields.
    • You cannot find the custom fields screen: check your permissions in No permission.
