How do I know where each lead came from?
UTMs are parameters you add to an ad's link. When the visitor arrives through the page and becomes a contact, that information travels with them — and you learn which campaign brought which person.
Before you start
- Role: Owner, Admin or Editor.
- Agree the convention before launching a campaign. UTMs are not retroactive: anything that came in unmarked stays without a source forever.
1. Agree a convention and stick to it
The biggest problem with UTMs is not technical, it is discipline. facebook, Facebook and fb become three different sources in the report.
Always lowercase, no accents, no spaces.
2. Apply them to your ad links
Build the link with the parameters and use it in the ad. If you use a short link, make sure it preserves the parameters through to the final page — see redirects and short links.
3. Confirm the source reaches the contact
Capture a test lead through a link carrying UTMs and open the contact in Contacts. The source has to be recorded there. If it is not, nothing downstream will work.
4. Use the source to segment
With the source recorded, you can split audiences by campaign into segments and start comparing not just lead volume but quality — which source produces contacts that buy, not just contacts.
5. Cross it with revenue
Lead volume does not pay the bills. Connect the source to the paid order in measure campaign ROI.

If it didn't work
- The source arrives empty: the ad link may be missing the parameters, or a redirect dropped them.
- Duplicate sources with different spellings appear: standardise, and fix the ads already live.
- The lead came in another way: direct and organic traffic carry no UTMs — that is expected.
